“My approach to the practice of criminal law was shaped by my early experience in the criminal justice system. Following law school, I was awarded a year-long judicial clerkship at the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. During that year, I honed my legal research and analytical skills. I learned, in depth, criminal law, the importance of preserving legal error at the trial court level, and the procedures of an appellate court. I joined the Travis County District Attorney’s Office after completing my clerkship, and learned the inner workings of the criminal justice system by working with judges, court coordinators, probation officers, law enforcement, and defense attorneys. I gained substantial experience trying serious criminal cases and plea bargaining from the prosecution’s standpoint.
When I left the District Attorney’s Office as a felony trial court chief, I understood criminal law from the point of view of judges, prosecutors, and other players within the system. For the past 30 years, I have used that knowledge to defend thousands of clients, facing charges ranging from class C misdemeanors to capital crimes where the death penalty was sought. No matter the charge, I develop a relationship with each client and handle each case personally with the help of my legal assistant, who is involved in every aspect of the case.
